Choosing an adult day program on Long Island

Social adult day care and adult day health care are different kinds of program in New York. This guide explains how they differ and lists questions to ask any program on Long Island.

Social adult day care or adult day health care?

Social adult day programs provide planned activities, meals and snacks. Adult day health care adds health services such as nursing care.

New York explains both: the State Office for the Aging describes social adult day services, and the Department of Health describes adult day health care.

TrueCare is a social day program serving the elderly, especially those with dementia and Alzheimer’s. If the person you care for needs nursing care or help with medication, raise it early with each program you’re considering and ask plainly whether that need can be met.

If the person you care for is living with dementia, our guide to how adult day care can help someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s covers what research has found.

Days, hours and getting there

  • Which days and hours does the program run? Are half days possible?
  • Can your loved one attend part time, or only on set days?
  • How do arrival and pickup work? Is transportation offered, or do families handle it?
  • What happens if your schedule changes or they’re unwell?

TrueCare is open Monday to Friday and on Saturdays at our Massapequa program on Veterans Boulevard and Seaford program on Merrick Road, with a morning half day (8 AM–1 PM), an afternoon half day (1–6 PM) or a full day (8 AM–6 PM), plus a Saturday half day (11 AM–4 PM). See sessions, activities and meals.

What the day includes

  • What does a typical day look like, and how much does it vary?
  • Which activities are offered, and what if someone would rather watch for a while?
  • Is there a quiet place to rest?
  • Which meals and snacks are provided, and what should families send from home?

See what TrueCare’s morning half day includes.

Ask about the people

  • Who will be with my parent during the day?
  • How does the program decide who it can serve, and what happens if needs change?
  • How do staff and families keep in touch?

Talk about cost early

Cost usually depends on the schedule you choose. Ask what is included, whether anything costs extra and how absences or schedule changes are handled. TrueCare doesn’t list prices online; call 516.757.2557 and ask about the schedule you have in mind.

Visit before you decide

The Alzheimer’s Association guide to adult day centers has more questions to bring. Our guide to preparing for your first visit covers what to note down and ask.
